BCCI to double the number of on-field umpires in Ranji Trophy after no video technology

Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has found out a solution for no video technology available in new grounds which will be hosting Ranji Trophy matches. BCCI has the facility to record all the domestic games recognized by them so that match referee could look at the footages and take steps if needed.

New venues are added this season to expand the game of cricket in India. Places like Nadaun, Uttarakhand, Dimapur, and Shillong will host Ranji Trophy games.

These venues won't have video technology and that is why BCCI is looking to double the on-field umpires to easily take a fair decision on run-outs and stumpings.

Former BCCI general manager Ratnakar Shetty had a chat with Hindustan Times and confirmed the news. Shetty, currently associated with Uttarakhand as BCCI nominee, said that the ongoing game between Uttarakhand and Bihar in Dehradun had no video footage being recorded. “Yes, you have heard it right, we do not have the equipment to record video footages,” he said.

Saba Karim said that India's cricket body is currently trying to fix the issue. “Yes, we were not able to provide video equipment to some of the new venues, but the process is on and the problem will be solved in a couple of weeks. Also, you have to realize that apart from those game wherein the matches are telecast live, there is no third umpire. It is the match referee who doubles up as the third umpire. But with there being no camera to shoot run outs and stumping moves, the call will be taken by the on-field umpires.

“The non-telecast games have a set of 6 cameras and all shots of stumping and run outs from them are referred to the match referee. Match referees also use match footages to evaluate umpires and both the participating teams are also given CDs of the match footage. We are looking to provide two sets of video equipment to all venues at the earliest,” he said in a chat with Hindustan Times.
