World Cup 2019 final between England and New Zealand was fascinating. The game will be remembered for long, not only because of the quality of cricket and fierce competition but also because of the controversy erupted during the contest.

There was an overthrow in the last over of England's chase which made fans rage at the umpire. On-field umpires gave it six runs as the batsman had run two before the ball hit batsman Ben Stokes' bat and raced towards the boundary.

But after the game, former international umpire Simon Taufel pointed out that the batting side deserved only five runs and not six. As per the rule, if an overthrow goes for a boundary, the batsman has to cross each other before the throw or action to get the run counted.

English batsmen had just left the crease when Martin Guptill threw the ball from deep, making only one run valid and not the second one.  Kumar Dharmasena, who was one of the umpires in final, admitted that he messed up. Talking to Sunday Times, he said, "I agree that there was an error of judgement when I see it on TV replays now. But we did not have the luxury of TV replays at the ground, and I do not regret the decision I made."

Dharmasena said he signalled six after consulting the other match officials. "So, I did consult the leg umpire (Erasmus) through the communication system which is heard by all other umpires and the match referee," he told the newspaper.

"While they cannot check TV replays, they all confirmed that the batsmen have completed the second run. This is when I made my decision."
