There was some consolation for the Indian fans after the end of ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 as their star batsman Rohit Sharma finished the tournament as the highest run-scorer.

Rohit hit a purple patch in the World Cup 2019, amassing 648 runs from 9 innings at an average of 81. In the process, the Indian vice-captain also became the first batsman in World Cup history to score five centuries in a single edition.

Australia opener David Warner was second on the list with 647 runs from 10 innings at an average of 71.88. The southpaw fell one run short of Rohit’s tally and hit three tons and three fifties in the showpiece event. Third on the list was star all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan, who tallied 606 runs from 8 games at 86.57 with two centuries and five fifties.

England's Joe Root and New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson were the only two batsmen who had a realistic chance of surpassing Rohit's total but both of them got out cheaply in the final at Lord’s on Sunday (July 14).

While Root scored 7 runs and finished with 556 runs in 11 games at 68.62 with two hundreds and three half-centuries, Williamson aggregated 578 runs in 10 matches at 96.33 including two centuries and two fifties. The Kiwi captain got out for 30 in the summit clash, falling to Liam Plunkett in the 23rd over.

The number of runs scored by Rohit, however, was still not enough to overhaul Sachin Tendulkar's tally of most runs in a single World Cup edition. Rohit needed just 27 runs to overtake Tendulkar's tally of 673 runs but he got out for just 1 in the first semi-final against New Zealand.

This is the fourth time an Indian batsman has finished the World Cup as highest run-getter. While Tendulkar topped the run charts in 1996 and 2003, Rahul Dravid did it in the 1999 edition.
