Amid a lot of speculations regarding MS Dhoni's retirement following India's ouster from the World Cup 2019, batting legend Sachin Tendulkar said that the wicketkeeper batsman should be given the space to go out on his own terms.

Coming into bat at No. 7, Dhoni scored 50 off 72 balls as India fell 18 runs short of Black Caps’ 240-run target in the first semi-final at Old Trafford on Wednesday (July 10).

"That's his personal decision [end of 50-over career]. Everyone should give him that space and respect that. Every should respect what his contribution to India cricket rather than starting speculations. After having contributed so much, he should be the one taking that decision," Tendulkar told India Today.

Showering rich praise on Dhoni, Sachin further added that not many have had a successful career like the 2011 World Cup winning captain. He also pointed out that India fans wouldn't have given up hopes as long as Dhoni was out in the middle in the all-important semi-final.

"How many guys can have a career like this? He has had a special career. The support and belief that people have in him is a reflection of his contribution. People still believed that he could go and finish the game. The game was not over till the time he was out there."

Meanwhile, India skipper Virat Kohli also confirmed that his predecessor hasn't yet told him anything about his future plans.

"No he hasn't told us anything as of now," Kohli told reporters when queried over Dhoni’s future after the semi-final loss.
