Amid a lot of excitement, India and New Zealand faced each other in the first semifinal of ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 at Old Trafford on Tuesday (July 9).

Opting to bat first, New Zealand got off a terrible start as they lost Martin Guptill for just 1 off Jasprit Bumrah’s bowling. Henry Nicholls and captain Kane Williamson stitched a 68-run stand for the second wicket to steady the sheep. Ravindra Jadeja broke the partnership by removing Nicholls for 28.

Afterwards, Williamson and Ross Taylor added 65 runs but their partnership lacked intent as they played plenty of dot balls and took 102 balls for it. Yuzvendra Chahal sent Williamson packing for 95-ball 67 to reduce the Kiwis to 134/3 in 35.2 overs.

Taylor, however, remained firm at one end and added two crucial little partnerships with James Neesham and Colin de Grandhomme. In the process, he also completed his fifty and smashed Chahal for 18 runs in his last over.

With 23 balls to go, however, the predicted rain arrived in Manchester and New Zealand had to halt their innings on 211/5. There was hope that the weather would improve and that a reduced India innings would be possible, but a persistent light drizzle meant the covers could not be permanently removed. Black Caps will continue their innings on reserve day (July 10) with Taylor batting on 67 not out.

Although rain played spoilsport in the marquee clash, fans had enough time to keep coming up with a number of funny memes and jokes all over the social media.
