In most of the ICC tournaments, South Africa went as favorites but at the end, they are left dumbstruck and heartbroken. This time they were no pressure of favorites but still, they ended up having their worst ever ODI World Cup. They could win only three matches out of nine and finished at the seventh position in the points table.

South Africa's campaign kicked off against England in The Oval and in the first match, they fell flat and suffered a loss of 104 runs. In the next match against Bangladesh, they put up a good fight but fell short of the target by 21 runs. In the third match, India beat them by 6 wickets and three back to back losses had shattered their confidence and the injuries of Steyn and Lungi Ngidi were also big setbacks. The fourth match against West Indies ended in a no result affair due to rain.

Their first win came in the fifth match against Afghanistan. In the sixth match, they lost to New Zealand in a last-over thriller and in the seventh match Pakistan crushed them and they got eliminated from the race of semifinal. Though in the last two matches they made a good comeback and beat both Sri Lanka and Australia and finished their disappointing tournament on a winning note.

Throughout the tournament, South African top order batsmen except for captain Faf du Plessis and Rassie van der Dussen, failed to convert their starts into big knocks. Hashim Amla, Quinton de Kock, David Miller, Aiden Markram, and JP Duminy all had a poor tournament with the bat. In the bowling, Kagiso Rabada and Imran Tahir couldn't lead from the front. Though Chris Morris and Dwaine Pretorious did well but couldn't make much impact due to lack of support from other bowlers.
