CWC 2019: Ian Gould to retire from umpiring duties after India-Sri Lanka match

Ian Gould retires after 13 years of service to ICC and 140 ODI matches.

Ian Gould | GettyEnglish umpire Ian Gould has decided to bring down the curtains on his cricket umpiring career after his outing as an umpire in India’s match against Sri Lanka on Saturday, June 6.

Gould finishes his umpiring career with having umpired in 74 tests. Gould was an accomplished wicket-keeper, and called on time on his playing career in 1990, after which he took coaching role in Middlesex. He featured in the 1983 World Cup and played against India in the semi-finals.

He was an England wicket-keeper, and kept behind the stumps for England in 1990, playing 18 ODIs in total and over 600 games in First Class and List A cricket.

He is called “gunner” owing to his time in Arsenal youth set-up. Gould played for Middlesex, Sussex, and even had some spells in New Zealand with Auckland.

However, it’s his umpiring that made him best known. The 61-year old made his umpiring debut 13 years ago in T20 international England and South Africa in Southampton, which witnessed visitors sealing a thriller by just two runs.

His ODI debut was followed five days later, in the match between same two sides, the same year he got his first taste of World Cup Cricket.

He joined ICC’s Elite Panel of umpires just two years back, umpiring the final of ICC Champions Trophy in South Africa.
