West Indian batting sensation Nicholas Pooran said his team is looking to restore pride in West Indies cricket in home series against India after their dismissal World Cup 2019 campaign in England.
On Monday, 1st July, Pooran’s frightening century went in vain as West Indies suffered another crushing defeat in the ongoing World Cup, thrashed out by 23 runs by Sri Lanka in Durham.
However, Pooran said that his team’s performance was not good as good in the showpiece event, but said they are a young team and going through a learning experience, saying the Carrebean are hoping to head in the right direction with India series at home in September.
As per ICC, Pooran said after Sri Lanka match, “This hasn't been a successful tournament for us but as sportsmen, you fail more than you win and this has been a learning experience. We have a young team and a young batting line-up. Hopefully, a lot of guys like me, Shimron Hetmyer, Shai Hope and Fabian Allen have learned from this tournament.”
Meanwhile, West Indies are scheduled to host India to play three T20Is, three ODIs, and two Tests, starting from August 3 and Pooran said: “Hopefully when we play our next series against India we can start heading in the right direction and restore pride in West Indies cricket.”
He was often compared with batting legend Brian Lara and Pooran admitted that he watched a lot of videos of the Windies legend, but does not intend to be like him, but insisted: “I don't want to be like anyone else, I just want to be Nicholas Pooran.”
He signed off by saying, “I know people say a lot of things about me but if I don't perform on the field it makes no sense. I just want to get better and better each day. I have had a lot of starts in this tournament but not converted. I don't know what the future holds - I'm just thankful that I got the opportunity to play and I could show the selectors that I could play.”
