Bangladesh registered a comprehensive seven-wicket victory over West Indies in the 23rd match of ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 on Monday (June 17).

Chasing 322 to win, Bangladesh rode on Shakib Al Hasan’s sparkling century (124* off 99 balls) and Liton Das’ blazing 69-ball 94 to overhaul the target with 51 balls to spare.

Apart from Bangladesh’s brilliance, the match also witnessed a bizarre incident. In the 49th over of West Indies’ innings, Oshan Thomas faced Mustafizur Rahman and looked to go down the ground. However, fans and players alike were left stunned to find that the bails had somehow been dislodged.

Subsequently, Bangladesh players appealed for hit wicket and umpires gave a soft signal for not out before deciding to go upstairs. Replays showed that Thomas had hit the wickets with his bat. But third umpire Paul Wilson still adjudged it not out, saying Thomas took the bails down after completing his shot.

The umpire was absolutely correct as per MCC's Law 35 which stipulates: "The striker is out Hit wicket if, after the bowler has entered the delivery stride and while the ball is in play, his/her wicket is put down by either the striker’s bat or person."

Additionally, MCC's Rule 35.2, pertaining to not out on hit wickets, says, "The striker is not out under this Law should his/her wicket be put down in any of the ways referred to in 35.1. If it occurs after the striker has completed any action in receiving the delivery."
