England took on West Indies in Match 19 of World Cup 2019 at Southampton this Friday (June 14).

The hosts won the toss and decided to bowl first due to overcast conditions and seam movement that was available at the Rose Bowl. And it paid off huge dividends, as the likes of Chris Woakes (1/16), Jofra Archer (3/30), Liam Plunkett (1/30), Mark Wood (3/18), Ben Stokes (0/25) and Joe Root (2/27) delivered fantastic spells.

For West Indies, only Nicholas Pooran (63), Shimron Hetmyer (39) and Chris Gayle (36) were able to put up a fight against the pace and smarts of English bowling while the rest struggled. The Calypso Kings wilted under pressure before eventually getting bundled out for just 212 in 44.4 overs.

In the run-chase, England's Jonny Bairstow and Joe Root  - who opened only because of an injury to regular opener Jason Roy - kickstarted things in a dominated fashion. They stitched a magnificent stand of 95 runs before Bairstow was dismissed on 45. England then interestingly sent pacer Chris Woakes, a handy lower-order batsman, at No.3. But he batted really well for a fine 40 along with Root, who continued on in his merry way towards a solid ton (100*), his second of this World Cup following one versus Pakistan.

The duo had a fantastic 104-run partnership that helped England scale down the majority of the chase left with absolute ease and put an early end to the proceedings in just 33.1 overs. No.4 Ben Stokes made 10*

For West Indies, Sheldon Cottrell (0/17), Oshane Thomas (0/43), Shannon Gabriel (2/49), Andre Russell (0/14), Jason Holder (0/31), Carlos Brathwaite (0/35) all failed to tap the flow of runs and couldn't save their team from an embarrassing defeat.

Brief scores:

West Indies - 212 (Nicholas Pooran 63; Jofra Archer 3/30) lost to England - 213/2 (Joe Root 100; Shannon Gabriel 2/49) by eight wickets.
