CWC 2019: Mark Wood desperate to give West Indies a taste of its own medicine

England fast bowler Mark Wood can't wait for his team's next World Cup 2019 clash against the West Indies at Southampton on Friday (June 14). The 29-year-old is hoping to replicate Calypso Kings' act of having served brutal pace and bounce to the opposition batsmen in the tournament thus far. It's a quest to give them a taste of their own medicine.

"The Windies in this World Cup have come with a clear game plan and that is a lot of short stuff. We got a taste of that in the Windies on the recent tour. But I can remember getting Darren Bravo and Hetmyer out to short balls so it is a good thing we can fight fire with fire," Wood was quoted as saying by AFP

West Indies has hammered Pakistan, lost narrowly to Australia and seen a rain-abandoned draw with South Africa. The team sits sixth in the points table as of now, whereas England with wins over South Africa and Bangladesh either side of a close defeat to Pakistan, is currently ranked second.

"It could be like that, just landing blow after blow, back and forth, back and forth. The opposition batsmen don't get a break if there is pace from both ends and it'd be nice if we can continue that trend."

"When real pace bowling is on show it definitely ruffles a few feathers and changes the momentum of the game."

On England's tour of the Caribbean earlier this year, hosts' speedsters bowled with kind of pace and hostility that was once associated with the previous generation of West Indies speedsters. The three lions lost the Tests 2-1 and had to settle with a draw in the five-match ODI series.

However, in Wood, and his partner Jofra Archer, England now has quicks who can also give back as received and imitate Oshane Thomas, Sheldon Cottrell, Andre Russell and Jason Holder.

"It is a good competition between us, a friendly one. To have us both bowling at 94 and 95mph and have two guys from the England team at the top of that list is pretty good," Wood added.

"It pushes us for sure. You're pushing each other to be the best you can be and to be as quick as you can be. You have banter about it for sure, but you're helping each other. I'm trying to bowl 0.1 mph quicker than Jofra and he's trying to bowl 0.1 faster than me," he concluded.
