Bangladesh beat South Africa by 21 runs in their opening match of ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 in The Oval and started their campaign with a bang and on the other hand, South Africa suffered their second consecutive loss.

Earlier Faf du Plessis won the toss and opted to field first but their new ball bowlers Kagiso Rabada and Lungi Ngidi couldn't take wickets with new ball and Bangladesh openers gave a good 60 runs start in just 8 overs. Andile Phehlukwayo broke this stand by removing Tamim Iqbal and after a few overs Sarkar also got out of Chris Morris bowling.

Shakib-Al-Hasan and Mushfiqur Rahim took the charge in their hands and continue to play shots and their 132 runs stand for the third wicket set the platform for a big score. In the end, South Africa picked up a few wickets but couldn't stop Mahmudullah and Mosaddek Hossain in the end and Bangladesh finished on 330/6 in 50 overs. Shakib al Hasan scored 75 runs and Mushfiqur Rahim played 78 runs knock.

In reply, South Africa started well and openers Quinton de Kock and Aiden Markram added 49 runs for the first wicket. Quinton de Kock got run out in a bizarre way. Markram and Faf du Plessis rebuilt the innings and took the score to over 100 but Shakib dismissed Markram for 45 runs and broke this stand.

Faf du Plessis brought up his fifty with a six but couldn't convert it into a big knock and got out off Mehedi Hasan bowling and at 147/3 South Africa was in trouble. David Miller, Rassie van der Dussen, JP Duminy also got starts but none of them could convert and the team kept losing wickets and eventually they finished on 309/8 and fell short of the target by 21 runs. Shakib al Hasan was named Man of the Match.
