CWC 2019: World Cup snub not the end of the road for Rishabh Pant; he is just 21, says Ganguly

Former India captain and Delhi Capitals advisor Sourav Ganguly on Wednesday (April 24) said that Rishabh Pant’s omission from the World Cup squad is not the end of the road for the youngster. Last week, the MSK Prasad-led selection committee picked Dinesh Karthik over Rishabh Pant as a back-up glovesman to MS Dhoni, saying that the former has superior wicketkeeping skills.

After his match-winning 36-ball 78* for Delhi Capitals against Chennai Super Kings on Monday (April 22), Pant had said that the selection snub from India’s World Cup squad was on his mind but he backed himself to guide his team over the line.

However, Ganguly reckons Pant is just 21-year-old and shouldn’t be thinking too much about the non-selection.

"Pant is a fantastic player. He is just 21 years old so there is nothing to worry," Ganguly quoted as saying by IANS.

Asked about not getting picked in the World Cup squad, he added: "There is no point talking about it. This is not the end of the road for him. He is only 21 years of age. I always stay with him and the players."

Delhi Capitals are having a stellar IPL 2019 campaign. The Shreyas Iyer-led side have won 7 of its 11 matches and are placed at the second spot in the points table.

Quizzed if he is the reason for their success, Ganguly said: "I don't play and it is not possible for me to do it alone. It is always the players who are responsible."

Commenting on the upcoming World Cup, Ganguly said it is going to be one of the most keenly contested one before terming India among the favourites.

"Indian cricket is so strong that in any tournament they will be favourites. This World Cup will probably be the best format. The best four teams will reach the semi-finals and there are no easy teams," he opined.
