CWC 2019: ICC CEO weighs in on Indo-Pak World Cup match debate

There has been pressure on BCCI to cut all their cricketing ties with Pakistan.

The blockbuster India-Pakistan match in this year's ICC Cricket World Cup is not foreseen under any threat by David Richardson, the chief executive of the tournament organising and sport governing body. The two nations will have to abide by the agreement signed as per rules and regulations of the International Cricket Council and hence, one can expect the encounter to be played despite the current political tensions across the border.

Ever since last month’s Pulwama terrorist attack which martyred more than 40 CRPF personnel happened, there have been calls for India to boycott whatever cricketing ties possible with Pakistan.

"For ICC events, all teams have signed a members’ participation agreement which requires them to participate in all the matches of the tournament and (in case of) any unjustified non-compliance with that provision, the playing conditions will kick in and the points will be awarded accordingly (to the other team)," Richardson was quoted saying by the PTI in Karachi, where he visited the occasion of 2019 Pakistan Super League (PSL) final.

Another matter that became controversial recently was the Indian cricket team wearing camouflage military caps during the third ODI against Australia in Ranchi to pay due respect the CRPF personnel. Virat Kohli and his team also donated match fee to the National Defence Fund.

It is something Pakistan strongly objected and accused BCCI of politicising the game. But ICC has confirmed that adequate permission was sought by Team India before the gesture came into being.

"In this case, it was a one-off consent," Richardson said. "It was granted subject to the message around the wearing of the caps simply being sympathy with the people, who had lost their lives in the (Pulwama) attack and in particular, to help them raise funds for the families of the people who had lost their lives. The ICC’s motto is clear we don’t want to mix politics with sports."
