Indian Government to take final call on Indo-Pak World Cup clash: Sources

The attack on a CRPF convoy in Pulwama on the Jammu-Srinagar highway has worsened the relationship between India and Pakistan. And now it seems that the ghastly terror attack might put the marquee India-Pakistan clash at the World Cup 2019 in jeopardy.

The dastardly attack saw 40 CRPF jawans martyred and many injured, with Pakistan-based terrorist outfit Jaish-e-Mohammad claiming responsibility for this deplorable act.

India will have to forfeit two valuable points if they concede their fourth match of the mega event on June 16 in Manchester. Notably, all 10 teams at the World Cup will play nine matches each in the group stage and the top four will directly qualify for the semi-final.

"No bilateral matches happening from the last 10 years between India and Pakistan. India is only playing Pakistan in ICC tournaments. Now, we in the BCCI will follow further government decision on it,” former BCCI vice-president Rajeev Shukla quoted as saying by India Today.

"BCCI CEO will follow government order, whether India has to play ICC matches with Pakistan or not. If government thinks that India should not play vs Pakistan, BCCI will definitely follow the instruction," he added.

Report also claims that this issue will be discussed on the sidelines of the ICC meeting on February 27 in Dubai.

Meanwhile, a BCCI source has revealed that the final call on the all-important match will be taken by the Indian government regardless of ICC's verdict.

"Situation will get clearer after some time, a little closer to the World Cup. ICC has nothing to do with it. If the government at that point in time feels we shouldn't play, it's obvious that we won't play," the source quoted as saying by India Today.

"But the result of that would be that Pakistan will get the points of the match & if it is final (b/w India & Pakistan), they will win the World Cup without even playing. We haven't yet approached ICC in this regard," he further said.

Amidst speculation from various quarters, ICC CEO David Richardson on Tuesday (February 19) said that there is no change in the schedule of the mega event as yet.

"There is no indication that any (of the) matches at the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup will not go ahead as planned. Sport, in particular cricket, has the wonderful ability to bring people together and unite communities and we will work with our Members on that basis," Richardson said in a statement to PTI.
