Cricket Australia(CA) on Friday, February 8 named former captain Ricky Ponting as their assistant coach for this year's ICC Cricket World Cup in England and Wales. 

Development transpires immediately amidst widespread concerns over Australian batting line-up, which Ponting will help during the 10-team marquee ODI event from May 30 to July 14. 

While current batting coach Graeme Hick will be focussing on preparing the side for the Ashes, starting in August.

Head coach Justin Langer, who actually pushed for Ponting's inclusion in the set-up, is quite happy as the experience that his ex-teammate brings to the table will be invaluable for players.  

"Ricky knows what’s required to win World Cups, and I know he will be a valuable mentor to not just the batting group, but the broader squad as we focus our attention on defending our World Cup title," Langer was quoted saying by cricket.com.au. 

"Ricky and I have worked together with the Australian men’s team in the past, he is an extremely driven coach who is fully invested in the players' development and improving Australian cricket."

"He has an impressive understanding of the game, he knows what’s required to prepare and perform at the elite level, and we can’t wait for him to get started working with the squad."
