Ashes 2019 between England and Australia commenced on Thursday at Edgbaston and fans were served a good contest between bat and ball on the first day. However, the experience was a bit bitter, too because of poor umpiring.

Fans were annoyed with the back-to-back wrong calls. Umpires Aleem Dar and Joel Wilson gave seven wrong decisions on the first day of the Edgbaston Test. Twitterati didn't stop themselves from demurring the umpiring decisions. Twitter was filled with jokes and tweets, which reflected the emotions of the fans.

The first wrong decision came in the second over of Australia's innings when David Warner had nicked one behind, but the umpire turned down the decision. It was made up by another wrong decision. In the fourth over, Warner was given Leg Before Wicket, but the review showed the ball was missing the leg stump.

A few more bad decisions followed the first two. Thankfully, teams were saved because of the Decision Review System on multiple occasions. One such instance is from 15th over of the first innings when Usman Khawaja was given not-out despite edging the ball back to the keeper Jos Buttler. English skipper Joe Root soon went for DRS, and the review showed he was out.

Even the commentators were surprised with the umpiring. "The standard of umpiring today has been ordinary," Mike Atherton said in the commentary box.
