It is a hiding of sorts as the worst ODI form of Australia continued. The post-Ashes glow is quickly fading for the hosts if it hasn’t already as Australia find themselves in the midst of an alarming slump in a format that they are current world champions. England’s pugnacious win at the Sydney Cricket Ground meant that the Australians have lost the five-match series, with two matches remaining. Australia struggled to match the aggression of England and the inability of their top-three to play with freedom mirrored their struggles in the series. While England’s adventurous and a somewhat cavalier approach has laid the platform for high scores. With the series already pocketed, England will go for the kill in Adelaide.

Best economical pick – In the absence of Ben Stokes, the rise of Chris Woakes has been a revelation as shown in both the unbeaten innings of 39 and 53 in the series so far. With the ball, four wickets and an economy rate of 5.48 make him a go-to man for Morgan.

Top captains & vice captains – Aaron Finch has been the star performer for the Aussies, in what has been a disastrous Gillette ODI series so far for the Aussies. He leads the batting charts from both sides (275 runs, avg. of 91.66, SR of 96.15), but will be frustrated with the way his team capitulated around him. Jos Buttler has emerged as one of the cleanest hitters of the cricket ball. He played a quick-fire hand of 42 runs off 32 balls at Gabba and carried forward the form in the third ODI. He notched his fifth century in One-Day Internationals with a score of 100 runs in 83 balls. During the course of his batting masterclass, he hit six boundaries and four massive hits into the stands.

Smart pick – Marcus Stoinis has emerged as a handy all-rounder for Australia. Along with his variations in pace, Stoinis can also hit the ball a fair distance. However, at the Sydney Cricket Ground, he also showed nerves of steel and played a calm-headed, yet blistering knock of 56 off 43 balls.

Cautious Pick – The Australian bowling attack struggled from the first match and again faltered perilously in the third ODI in Sydney. The English batsmen had no problems whatsoever against the likes of Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood as most of the Aussies leaked runs at an alarming rate.

My XI – Aaron Finch (Captain), Jos Buttler (Vice-Captain), Marcus Stoinis, Adil Rashid, Mitchell Starc, Chris Woakes, Alex Hales, Mitchell Marsh, Jason Roy, Eoin Morgan, David Warner
