AUS v IND 2018-19: Gilchrist settles debate surrounding MS Dhoni's short run during the Adelaide ODI

Normalcy returned as MS Dhoni found his lost mojo to help India win in Adelaide and level the ongoing three-match ODI series against Australia, 1-1. The great wicketkeeper-batsman struck an invaluable 55 off 54 balls and batted around the vibrant strokeplay that Virat Kohli and Dinesh Karthik exhibited to once again guide his team past the finishing line.

However, a moment from the run-chase of 299 runs almost triggered a controversy. A clip featuring Dhoni went viral on social media as it revealed him not completing the single he did run for.

Subsequently, cricket lovers from around the world discussed whether the short-run could've had an impact on the game had the umpires caught the incident or not.

One such fan took to Twitter and quite interestingly queried Australian great Adam Gilchrist about the whole incident.

"@gilly381 regarding the @msdhoni #shortrun that you claim happened in the 45th over. Short Run can only be considered on the 2nd or any subsequent Runs," he asked, "Once the Batsman have crossed on first Run and the Fielding side decides to not do anything, then that Run will Stand."

Gilchrist then replied like you expect the legendary cricketer in him to do and settled the whole debate with his quote tweet.

"Thanks for advising. Clearly, @msdhoni wasn’t doing anything against the rules. It was just a unique situation not often seen." the former wicketkeeper-batsman, who played 96 Tests and 287 ODIs at the highest level, posted.

Even during his commentary stint for the host broadcaster Fox Sports, Gilchrist was heard saying, "In Lyon’s last ball of his spell, MS Dhoni chipped him to the onside and straight away said there is no need for any pushing there because I have already hit him for six earlier in the over. Then the over was called and nothing touched the ground there."

"So this will be interesting with India requiring 25 off 18 and it was in the 45th over, so I wonder if we will hear anything more about that should this go down to the wire."
