Australia and India restarted their white ball rivalry after an intense Test series, with the first of the 3-match ODI series being played at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG).
Australia had already announced their playing XI, which saw Jason Behrendorff making his ODI debut. Captain Aaron Finch won the toss and chose to bat first. India, on the other hand, had included Dinesh Karthik in the playing XI.
Aaron Finch couldn’t contribute much to the team’s cause, as he was bowled by Bhuvneshwar Kumar for 6 runs. Carey made 24 before Kuldeep had him caught by Rohit Sharma in slips. Then Khawaja (59) and Shaun Marsh (54) added 92 runs before Jadeja had Khawaja out LBW and Kuldeep got Marsh caught by Shami.
Australia highly needed a grand finish at the end, and it was provided by Peter Handscomb and Marcus Stoinis, who added quickfire 68 runs, with Handscomb making 73 in 61 balls with 6 fours and 2 sixes and Stoinis remained unbeaten on 47 in 43 balls with 2 fours and 2 sixes, as Australia finished on 288/5 in 50 overs.
For India, Kuldeep Yadav picked 2/54 and Bhuvneshwar Kumar picked 2/66, but he went for quite a few runs in death overs. Ravindra Jadeja also picked a wicket for 48 runs.
