The Indian cricket team has the opportunity to jump further close to England in the ICC ODI rankings by clinching victories during the 50-overs leg of their Trans-Tasman tour down under.

Virat Kohli's men will play eight ODIs - three in Australia and five in New Zealand and if they win each of them they'll gain four more rating points to retain their second position only one point behind the No.1 ranked England.

The three lions lead the table with 126 points while India currently has 121 points. Australia, going their most disappointing run of form in the limited overs formats, is ranked sixth in ODIs with just 100 rating points. While Kane Williamson's New Zealand is placed at third with 113 rating points.

India has been a dominant force in the ODIs with their victories in the Asia Cup and against West Indies at home last year. On the other hand, Australia with 2-1 loss versus South Africa at the summer and New Zealand whitewashing Sri Lanka 3-0 on home shores have had mixed fortunes in the recent past.

The first ODI against Australia kickstarts in Sydney on January 12 with the next two scheduled for Adelaide and Melbourne on January 15 and 18 respectively.

India then travels across to face the Kiwis in a five-match ODI series which begins with the first match in Napier on January 23.
