A dominant India secured their maiden Test series in Australia by a margin of 2-1 on Monday (January 7). With this win, Team India also ended a 71-year long wait to taste the success of Test series triumph down under and also reinforced their status as the numero uno side.

Impressed with India’s on Australian shores, legendary West Indian batsman Sir Vivian Richards has said that it is tough to beat the Aussies in their own den and Virat Kohli’s troops deserve all the credit for pulling off this feat.

“Let me take this opportunity to congratulate Virat and his team for such a magnificent performance Down Under. It was always going to be tough, but you guys came out smelling sweet,” Richards said in a video posted on Twitter.

Cheteshwar Pujara, who was adjudged Man-of-the-Series for his 521 runs in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, drew special praise from Richards.

“And to Pujara just magnificent batsmanship... I just felt real gold stuff. Well done to everyone. Magnificent performance again. Congratulations to the Indian team and to my good mate Ravi well done again,” he added.

Wins in the first Test in Adelaide and third Test in Melbourne ensured that India could not lose the four-match series while their batsmen, led by Pujara’s herculean 193, batted Australia out of the final Test in Sydney with a daunting first innings total of 622/7 (declared).

India had ripped through the Australian tail at SCG on a shortened Day 4, bowling the hosts out for 300 and subsequently enforcing the follow-on. Tim Paine and company were still trailing by 316 runs when the match was eventually called off as a draw.
