A dominant India clinched their maiden Test series in Australia by a margin of 2-1 after the final day’s play in Sydney was abandoned due to rain on Monday. By virtue of this triumph, Team India also ended a 71-year wait to taste the success of a Test series win down under. As a result, Virat Kohli became the first Indian as well as the first Asian captain to seal a Test series on Australian soil.

Wins in the first Test in Adelaide and third Test in Melbourne ensured that India could not lose the four-match series while their batsmen, led by Cheteshwar Pujara’s herculean 193, batted Australia out of the fourth Test with a daunting first innings told of 622/7 (declared).

India had ripped through the Australian tail in Sydney on a shortened Day 4, bowling the hosts out for 300 and subsequently enforcing the follow-on. Tim Paine and company were still trailing by 316 runs when the match was eventually called off as a draw.

With this win, India reinforced their status as the numero uno Test side and also retained the esteemed Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

Australian cricket fraternity was mighty impressed with the way Kohli and company fought their heart out to register a historic Test series win for India.
