Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell is hoping that Aaron Finch will get another opportunity to prove after he was dropped from the Playing XI for the Sydney Test against India.

In the ongoing 2018-19 Border-Gavaskar Trophy, Finch managed to score only 97 runs in 6 innings and had to face heavy criticism for his string of poor performances with the bat at home. This resulted in the 32-year-old being dropped for Peter Handscomb for the crucial fourth Domain Test against India.

The all-rounder further went on to express his hope that the latest setback does not finish off his former housemate and current national teammate in limited-overs format –Finch's Test career.

Maxwell said on Thursday, “I hope that (being dropped) doesn’t finish Finch off as a Test cricketer and hopefully next time he gets an opportunity he can bat in a position that I think – and a lot of Australia thinks – he’s more accustomed to.”

It was Finch’s only second Test series for Australia against India, having made his debut in the longest format in UAE against Pakistan in October 2017.

However, Finch performed well as an opener in his debut Test series but failed to make an impact in the home series, as his UAE success prompted the selectors to put him as an opener against India as well, but that idea went against him, felt Maxwell.

Maxwell signed off by saying, “He was probably a victim of his own success in the UAE. Having batted so well as an opener there it probably drove the Australia selectors and coaches to put him up there (against India) and I suppose that was fair enough. Hopefully, at some stage, he gets an opportunity to bat in the middle order and show the class he does have.”
