Indian bowlers’ showing in Test cricket on away tours this year has been one silver lining for the No.1 Test team. 

After picking up 60 wickets in three Tests against South Africa earlier this year, Indian bowlers claimed 20 wickets in three of the five Tests in England. Out of the 82 wickets taken in England, the pacers had shared 61 scalps with Ishant Sharma, Mohammad Shami, Jasprit Bumrah, Hardik Pandya and Umesh Yadav claiming 18, 16, 14, 10 and 3 wickets respectively.

The Indian pace attack is now proving their mettle in the ongoing Test series Down Under, having led the team to a 31-run victory in the first match at the Adelaide Oval.

Seeing the evolution of Indian fast bowlers in recent times, former opening batsman Gautam Gambhir has credited skipper Virat Kohli for identifying and backing the right kind of pacers.

"Their (Australia's) two best batsmen are not there. It's a massive advantage for India. Plus, India have a bowling attack as well. Australia don't have a batting line-up and India have got the bowling attack to take 20 wickets," Gambhir told NDTV.

"Virat Kohli has been very fortunate. A big credit goes to Virat Kohli for identifying these kind of bowlers as well," he added.

India bundled out Australia for 235 and 291 across the two innings in Adelaide. Bumrah was the stand-out pacer in India's historic win as he claimed three wickets each in two innings. While Shami took five wickets in Adelaide, Ishant chipped in with three wickets.

"Not many a times India have toured abroad and we have had the bowling attack to take 20 wickets. We were always dependent on one or two bowlers. But if you see this kind of line up, I think people contribute together to take 20 wickets," Gambhir remarked.

The southpaw, who recently bid adieu from international cricket, was full of praise for skipper Kohli.

"You've to give him the credit. He's tuck to these kind of players. He has identified these four or five bowlers who probably complete the bowling attack," Gambhir asserted.
