Former captain Steve Waugh has given Virat Kohli's men a "significant chance" to go on and clinch India's maiden Test series title down under.

With the rise in India's fast bowling stocks and the hosts missing two of their best batsmen in Steve Smith and David Warner, there have been genuine claims of this being country's best opportunity to come out triumphant for the very first time in the history of this beloved sport.

"I will see this as a significant chance and they would have prepared for this tour for a long time, I think it’s going to be a really close series," Waugh told ESPNcricinfo, "He(Virat Kohli) is a great player and loves the big moment, a bit like Tendulkar and Lara."

"They wait for these big series and that’s where they want to show their best. So who is the dangerman for Australia? They have got some really good batsmen, they have got a very good all-around team," he reaffirmed.

Even wicketkeeping great Adam Gilchrist feels that the might of Virat Kohli will prevail through the four-match Test tussle and said, "Virat is clearly the best player in the world at the moment. So India will look to him to score heavily but all are going to have their challenges and as too will the Australian batting line-up."

Before he emphasized the threat that Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood, and Mitchell Starc possess for the hosts.

"I think Pat Cummins is outstanding, Hazlewood is almost McGrath like with his bowling. Those three guys and there are a couple in the wings who are high-quality fast bowlers," he signed off.

The Border-Gavaskar Trophy starts with the first Test at Adelaide from Thursday, December 6.
