AUS v IND 2018-19: Sehwag picks India's opening combination for the first Test

The Border-Gavaskar Trophy begins with the first Test at Adelaide from December 6.

Assessing one of India's major worries ahead of the four-Tests series in Australia, former batting stalwart Virender Sehwag feels that the Virat Kohli led side should go in with young Prithvi Shaw and persist with the immensely talented KL Rahul, for the first Test at Adelaide.

While Shaw has had an outstanding start to his Test career -  237 runs at an average of 118.50 across three innings and man of the series honour for his exploits against the West Indies, KL Rahul continues to innocuously struggle across all formats despite being astonishingly skillful.

Breathing down their neck is the dependable Murali Vijay, who, having gone through a career-threatening sack from the side, has returned his way through magnificent performances for Essex in the County Championship.

Assessing the whole conundrum, Sehwag told Cricbuzz, "I think if I am the captain I will give full series to KL Rahul and Prithvi Shaw because Murali Vijay got his chance and now he has to wait for his chance again," before importantly stressing, "If anyone flops in eight innings then I will think of giving Murali Vijay a chance. I think those who have been waiting for their turn should get a fair chance to prove themselves."

"Prithvi Shaw has proved himself. He scored a hundred on debut and scored 60 odd runs in the next match so he is the future and he will play for the next 10-12 years."

"So he should get the full quota of matches in the series. I don’t see Murali Vijay playing in the Test matches in Australia," he concluded.

The Border-Gavaskar Trophy starts on Thursday, December 6.
