Glenn Maxwell played a swashbuckling knock (46 off 24 balls) to help Australia beat India by 4 runs in a rain-marred first T20I at The Gabba in Brisbane on Wednesday.

After being put into bat, Australia got off to a cautious start but failed to capitalize with opener D'Arcy Short (7) giving his wicket away in the fifth over. Skipper Aaron Finch (27) followed him soon after getting the initial start. Chris Lynn looked dangerous during his 37-run knock off 20 deliveries but Kuldeep Yadav got the better of him with a googly.

After Lynn’s departure, both Maxwell and Stoinis took matter into their own hands, taking the Indian bowlers to the cleaners. The duo forged a 78-run stand for the fourth wicket and guided Australia to 158/4 in 17-overs-a-side contest.

In particular, Maxwell was severe on the visiting bowlers as he smashed four gigantic sixes in his innings. He launched an all-out attack on Krunal Pandya in the penultimate over and was robbed off a certain boundary when a powerful stroke from his willow went up high in the air and ended up crashing into the spider camera.

Not only did the spider cam got all shaky, it also faced a bit of damage. The ball was rightfully deemed as a dead delivery.

Coming to the match, the revised target for the Men in Blue was 174 in 17 overs. Despite Dhawan’s sublime 76 off 42 balls and Dinesh Karthik’s breathtaking cameo (30 off 13 balls), India finished agonizingly short on 169/7. Adam Zampa was the stand-out bowler for the visitors, picking the crucial scalps of KL Rahul and Virat Kohli in his 4 overs by conceding only 22 runs.

By virtue of this win, Australia have taken a 1-0 lead in the three-T20I series. Melbourne will host the second game on Friday (November 23).
