Indian opener Rohit Sharma is in superlative form with the bat at the moment and Sourav Ganguly believes that Captain Virat Kohli should play the Mumbaikar at No.6 in the upcoming highly-anticipated Test series in Australia, starting from December 6 at Adelaide.

Rohit earned a spot in the Indian Test squad on the back of his stunning show in the White-ball game and would be handy at the lower order to give a brilliant final touch to the touring side in Australia.

With the two players among Murali Vijay, KL Rahul and Prithvi Shaw will be reserved to open the innings and Rishabh Pant as the wicket-keeper batsman, while Cheteshwar Pujara, Virat Kohli and Ajinkya Rahane will probably complete the top 5 and the No. 6 spot remains up for grab and Ganguly believes that the slot will be ideal for 31-year-old right-hander.

Ganguly opined on Thursday (November 15), “If you ask me, I would bat Rohit at No. 6 and go in with three pacers and one spinner. The simple logic is that Rohit is batting at his best and you don’t leave out a batsman of his calibre when he is in such good nick. Moreover, Rohit is very strong square of the wicket which is a prerequisite for success on Australian pitches.”

Former Indian captain also believes that Hardik Pandya’s absence will give Kohli a headache in selecting mainstream bowlers for the Australia series.

Ganguly signed off by saying, “With Hardik Pandya out injured, the team management faces a tricky decision - whether to play six specialist batsmen (apart from Rishabh Pant) and four frontline bowlers or go in with five specialists in each department. It’s a dilemma that most modern-day captains face.”
