After a very disappointing outing in the ODI series against England, team Australia hoped for renewed fortunes as they entered the home tri-nation series. In the first match of the tri-series that involved England and New Zealand as the other participants, the hosts took on the Kiwi side. The trans-Tasman rivalry has always been an interesting affair and the build up to the game was quite intense. Australia cruised to a comfortable seven-wicket victory over their Oceania rivals New Zealand after the rain gods interrupted play. Now they will face the inform England in the 2nd game of this tri series who defeated them badly in the ODI series.

Best economical pick – Billy Stanlake made a major impact at the SCG on Saturday night, blowing away New Zealand's top order in the opening game of theT20 tri-series. With Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood and Pat Cummins all absent, he assumed strike bowling duties and removed Colin Munro, Martin Guptill and Tom Bruce in his first eight deliveries.

Top captains & vice captains – After the Australian openers headed back to the pavilion with single digit scores to their names, Chris Lynnand Glenn Maxwell exhibited great skills with the bat. The two hard hitting batsmen made a mockery of the Kiwi bowling attack. They were successful in launching a very good counter-attack. They added 77 runs off just 41 deliveries for the fourth wicket. Lynn was unfortunate to have not been able to finish the game. He perished with a score of 44 to his name. His knock came off 33 deliveries and was studded with six fours and a six. Meanwhile, Glenn Maxwell remained unbeaten on 40 off 24 balls with five fours.

Smart pick – While Billy Stanlake made merry with the new ball, the rising T20 sensation of the Australian team Andrew Tye proved to be lethal with his variations later in the game. Tye cleaned up the Kiwi tail to restrict the visitors to a mere 117/9 in their stipulated 20 overs. Tye got rid of the last three batsmen in the innings.

Cautious Pick – Jason Roy and Liam Plunkett have been rated a 50-50 chance for England's T20 Tri-Series opener against Australia. Roy, the dashing opener who scored a record-breaking 180 at the MCG last month, missed Friday's warm-up match in Canberra due to a back spasm. While the possible absence of Roy would be a blow, England have no shortage of replacements at the top of the order.

My XI – Chris Lynn (Captain), Glenn Maxwell (Vice-Captain), Andrew Tye, Billy Stanleke, Alex Hales, David Willey, Marcus Stoinis, Jos Buttler, D'arcy Short, Eoin Morgan, Adil Rashid
